Our instructors listed above will cover topics such as composition lighting basics, equipment, large mammals, macro and botany. All 3 instructors are members of GLPA and compete in Masters Class and are qualified in all aspects of nature photography

Part 1: By Ken Carlson

Topics to be covered: What is nature photography; photographing for experience vs. competition; pre-planning; considerations for traveling and choosing a tour; technical considerations of nature photography; equipment other than cameras and lenses; composition and lighting.

About Ken: Recently relocated to Maine, Ken travels extensively for his photography including trips to Churchill, Manitoba, Patagonia, Namibia and the Falkland Islands. He is a camera club judge, speaker and PSA Portfolio of Distinction assessor who was awarded the third level (Gold) designation for Portfolios by PSA in 2018. His 2016 portfolio is in the PSA Permanent Print Collection. He has won numerous awards and medals in club, interclub & international exhibitions including NECCC Class A Interclub Nature Image of the Year in both 2018 and 2019.

Part 2: By Rick Cloran

Topics to be covered: Rick will explore the key aspects of a successful competitive nature image and what separates them from an otherwise good nature image. Each of the key aspects is covered in short, easily remembered points reinforced with multiple examples using images that have and have not been successful at various competition levels. Also covered are considerations when shooting birds, mammals and insects with tips on doing insects in controlled conditions and in the field.

About Rick: A well known judge and lecturer, Rick enjoys passing on the techniques and knowledge he has picked up over the last 45 years. Past Chairman of the PSA Nature Division, he now serves as director of Nature Subject Identification Service and is a commentator for PSA Nature Study Groups. He is co-chair of the GLPA Nature Group and member of CamNats (an invitation only nature group).

Part 3: By Fran MacDonald

Topics to be covered: The workshop will conclude with macro and the technical aspects of doing it. Most of the subject matter will be flora. Subjects covered will be wildflowers - where and when to find them along with how to photograph them, depth of field, backgrounds, lighting, multiple exposures and stacking for depth of field.

About Fran: Fran is an officer on the NECCC Board of Directors and is past chair of PSA Nature Division Star Ratings. Also a member of CamNats, he is well known for his macro flower photography winning many awards & medals in club, interclub and international exhibitions. He has judged many Nature International Exhibitions and has recently relocated to VT.

There will be a short Q & A time after each part and longer time at end of the workshop if time permits.

Limited to 20 attendees per workshop

These two workshops will be presented by Hazel Meredith, APSA, HonNEC who is coming up from Tennessee. Hazel is an award-winning photographer, teacher, speaker workshop leader and highly respected competition judge who teaches post-processing techniques at camera clubs and conferences across the U.S. as well as through her own workshops and is a frequent webinar presenter for Topaz Labs. The author of eBook Working with Textures & Overlays: Turn Ho-Hum Into a Work of Art, she loves the creative aspect of photography and post-processing. In 2017, she and her husband, Dave, founded the "Creative Photography Conference" in New England. The event has now expanded from MA to venues throughout the U.S. Hazel is actively involved with the photographic community, and has held leadership roles and received honorary distinctions from several organizations. Hazel's website is www.MeredithImages.com and her Facebook page can be reached at www.facebook.com/MeredithImages

Both of these sessions are designed to be "hands-on", but if you prefer to follow along or share a computer with a friend, you are free to do so.

The morning session will be on on Photoshop Elements. (Beginner to Intermediate) 8:30am to 12:00pm. The doors will open at 8:00 a.m. There will be a short break for coffee and pastry.

1. Learn how to download your photos from your memory card to the Elements Organizer. We will review the workflow of your image, beginning with Layers – four types of layers, why they are important and what they do. Then, we will work together on projects to learn basic editing techniques - cropping, resizing, straightening; fixing color and lighting; fixing "problem" areas (zapping blemishes and dust bunny spots); converting an image to B&W or sepia monotone; using selections tools; and finally, sharpening and saving our photos.

2. Learn Layer Masks – what a powerful tool they are and how they make your workflow easier. Masking allows us to add areas of color to a B&W image as well as apply other effects to only a part of our images. In our projects we will use shapes, type, filters, and textures to jazz up your images. Hazel will also show you how to create your own word art and a travel poster of your favorite vacation spot.

Hazel will provide images that we will work on together as well as detailed notes so you can practice at home.

Photoshop Elements only:

For members and non-members: $65 by check ($67 if paying by PayPal)
