Drones Photo and Video Group

Larry Lessard, Group Leader

(available to members only)

This is our third year of Drone Group at GLPA. The goal of the Drone Group is to integrate the interesting perspectives available with flight into our artwork. The Group is open to GLPA Members regardless of whether they currently have a drone. Drones offer unique vantage points for capturing images that often can’t feasibly be duplicated otherwise. We meet on a Wednesday at 7:30pm four months of the year- October, November, March and April with a field trip shoot planned for May. Please see the schedule in the left side column for exact dates.

Sometimes, good photos are like real estate: Location, Location, Location. Your drone can give you the Location. We can share experiences and learn how to mitigate camera performance limitations and benefit from unique perspectives. The ability to change position and elevation remotely allows unique photos to be captured at any time of day.

Our goal for the group is to facilitate a core group of GLPA Members who can promote the safe and respectful use of drones and add to our photography fun. Meetings will be interactive with sharing of experience and opinions. The focus of meetings will vary month-to-month with anticipated topics including: FAA/PSA rules and regulations; image sharing and critique; locations and times to fly (or not fly); flight techniques; flight software; useful gear; and image processing. Drones are an evolving way to capture interesting landscape and action images and I hope we can learn from each other.

In addition to technical topics, group members share photos and videos for discussion. Participants may submit up to 5 drone images or up to 3 short videos that you would like to discuss. Please submit these no later than the Sunday prior to the meeting. No submissions are required to attend the meetings. We will open with a discussion period followed by presentation of and comments on the member images. I hope we can share techniques, experiences, and fun stories. As a group, we will pick beneficial discussion topics for future meetings. Discussions will not always be led by me. I consider this a cooperative endeavor. All members or guests can help each other learn.

We also hope to have some outings to fly and photograph together. This has been challenging in previous years because of the weather-dependency of flying which has limited advanced notice. Drone photography requires advanced planning and research. We can study some interesting spots for individual or group trips when the conditions are right.

Please feel free to contact me with your questions and suggestions. The group email is: drones@GreaterLynnPhoto.org.

Thank you,

Larry Lessard
