Co-Group Leaders

(available to members only)

We all understand that photography is a visual art form. We capture and craft our images with the goal of communicating with those who view them. Our goal may be as straight forward as sharing an experience with the viewer or it may be to evoke a particular emotion or response from the viewer. One of the things that is often overlooked is that unless the viewer was there when we made the image, it is being viewed by an “uninformed” person. That means they do not know what we went through to capture the image nor do they know what went into crafting the image as they see it. They also do not have our emotional attachment to the image. What they can tell us is what the image says to them.

The image study group is geared to those members wishing to share their images with their fellows without the structure or pressure often found in competition. Each member will be allowed to submit one image for each meeting. When their image is projected the maker will provide their name and say what they were trying to accomplish in making the image and what they are hoping the viewer will experience when viewing it. The makers can also ask questions of the other participants, such as whether they image would have been stronger if captured differently, would it be better in monochrome or color, or about some particular technique they are trying to apply or style they are trying to achieve.

The other members present will then provide open feedback on whether they are responding to the image as the maker intended or if something in the image is causing them to respond differently. They will also be expected to respond to any questions asked by the maker in a positive manner (as opposed to the negative tone often found in critiques). The goal is for those participating to gain a better understanding of how their images are perceived by others while getting feedback on their questions on how to improve the strength of their images.

While there may be an occasional sidebar where a technique will be discussed, it will be generalized and as applicable to all image editing programs as possible. This is not a workshop nor is it Adobe or any other source specific. There is no set range of subject matter. Anything goes provided that it is not offensive.

Images submitted for each group meeting should be in jpeg format and the sRGB color space and sized as you would for club competitions (1920 x 1080). The image should be titled as follows “Last Name_Image Title.jpg “. Images should be submitted to Rick Cloran at mrcloran@comcast.net by Tuesday of the group meeting week for that month. You do not have to submit an image to attend the meetings and participate in the discussion.
